# Use commonplot in ChatGPT, Claude, and Hermes (https://docs.commonplot.co/en/user/chatgpt-and-claude/)

Once commonplot is connected, articles, papers, posts, and videos that ChatGPT or Claude recommends appear as cards. Choose **Save** on a card to keep it in commonplot; nothing is saved until you do. The AI can also read your saves, notebooks, and documents to answer questions.

## Connect ChatGPT [#connect-chatgpt]

1. In ChatGPT, turn on **Settings → Security and login → Developer mode**.
2. Add an app with the URL `https://www.commonplot.co/api/mcp` and OAuth authentication.
3. Sign in to commonplot when asked and choose **Allow connection**.

## Connect Claude [#connect-claude]

1. In Claude, open **Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector**.
2. Enter the URL `https://www.commonplot.co/api/mcp`.
3. Sign in to commonplot when asked and choose **Allow connection**.

Start a new conversation once connected.

## Connect Hermes Agent [#connect-hermes-agent]

1. Add commonplot to `~/.hermes/config.yaml`:

   ```yaml
   mcp_servers:
     commonplot:
       url: "https://www.commonplot.co/api/mcp"
       auth: oauth
   ```

2. In a new terminal, run `hermes mcp login commonplot`.
3. Sign in to commonplot in the browser that opens and choose **Allow connection**.

Hermes stays connected afterward, including in scheduled runs. It works in the terminal, so it shows recommendations as text instead of cards and cannot save them; it can search commonplot and read your saves, notebooks, and documents.

## What you can do [#what-you-can-do]

- **Get recommendations and save them**: ask for reading, such as "Recommend five papers on agent evaluation", then choose **Save** on a card.
- **Ask about your saves**: for example, "What did I save this week?" or "What are the key points of the RAG evaluation paper I saved?" The AI can search your saves by topic, and see what an item cites, what discusses it and how many people saved it.
- **Ask about your notebooks and documents**: for example, "Summarize my AI chip supply chain notebook" or "What do my research notes say?" The first time, the AI asks you to allow access to notebooks and documents.
- **Write into a notebook**: for example, "Put these notes in my AI research notebook" or "Add the three papers we discussed to my thesis notebook." The AI only writes when you ask. The first time, it asks you to allow adding to notebooks.
- **Read in the conversation**: choose **Read** on a saved card to open the full text in the chat.

To make sure the AI uses commonplot, mention `@commonplot`, as in "@commonplot recommend reading on MCP".

## What the AI can access [#what-the-ai-can-access]

Once connected, the AI can:

- Search public commonplot content
- List and read your saved resources, including private files you uploaded
- Save links when you choose **Save**, and check their progress
- With your separate permission, read your notebooks and documents
- With another separate permission, create documents and add saves in the notebooks you name; it never edits or deletes what is already there

It cannot read other users' private data. Links saved through the AI appear on your public profile, like any other save. Content the AI reads is sent to the app you connected and the model provider it uses, under their privacy policies; see the commonplot [privacy policy](https://www.commonplot.co/privacy).

## Disconnect [#disconnect]

In commonplot, go to **Settings → Account → Connected apps** and choose **Disconnect**. Access stops immediately. Items you already saved stay.

## Get help [#get-help]

Email [hello@commonplot.co](mailto:hello@commonplot.co) with the app you use (ChatGPT, Claude, or Hermes) and what happened.
